ABSTRACT

Toxicologists work in many different roles and areas and are involved in the hazard and risk assessment of chemicals covering a wide variety of uses and applications. Governments register and control the use of agricultural chemicals. In the United States, pesticide registration at both the federal and state levels is required. The acute toxicity studies can be used as a starting point for establishing the appropriate dose levels in subchronic and other studies and may provide initial information on the mode of toxic action of a substance. Chronic toxicity studies are intended to determine the effects of a substance in a mammalian species following prolonged and repeated exposure. The developmental toxicity study, often referred to as a teratogenicity study, is designed to determine the potential of the test substance to induce structural and/or other abnormalities to the fetus as the result of exposure of the mother during pregnancy.
