ABSTRACT
This chapter will present the struggle between the secular/religious divide in Egypt that culminated in the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928. The roots of Western liberal democracy will also be discussed in juxtaposition with similar roots of the principle of ‘The Common Good’. The last section of the chapter will focus on tying the historical and ideological roots to what has transpired since the Egyptian revolution of 25 January 2011.
