ABSTRACT

The chapter reflects the increased emphasis in the SEND framework on the voice and rights of the child/young person and their parents/carers. It looks at how schools and their SENCos can work effectively with children and young people to learn about their views, feelings and wishes, and work with parents/carers to build good partnerships that improve pupil well-being and progress. The chapter describes personal skills required of the SENCo and teachers. Reference is made to the ‘structured conversation’ with parents, taken from the Achievement for All project. This chapter has been extended to discuss aspects related to young people in college and up to age 25.
