ABSTRACT

1. Together with my family, I visited the island of Rügen on 19/20 August at the invitation of Herr und Frau Reymann, the stereoscopic photo-journalists who made a less than satisfactory visit to the UK a few years ago. The Reymanns spend the greater part of the summer on Rügen giving shows to holiday-makers. They live in a modest dacha inherited from one set of parents. On Saturday evening we were joined by a number of their friends for a barbecue, including a lady doctor who works as a GP in Berlin for construction workers, a furniture dealer and a family from Querfurth near Halle, generally regarded as the most polluted corner of the GDR.
