ABSTRACT
Jana Byars looks to Girolamo Benzoni’s use of the monstrous in History of the New World. This travel narrative was extremely popular after its publication for its colorful reportage on the flora and sometimes terrifying fauna of the Americas. Byars argues, however, that his invocation of the monstrous to describe the then extremely powerful Spaniards really spoke to Europeans facing the Hapsburg threat.
