ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses exclusively on the BUZZSAW mission and the German exile recruited for this mission by Army Lieutenant Joseph Gould. His name is Werner Fischer. For reasons which will be explained below, his fate still remains a mystery. Along with the other German exiles recruited for the TOOL missions, Fischer also underwent parachute training at the Ringway Airfield near Manchester. The OSS had initially requested permission from the Soviet Army to dispatch the mission from behind their lines because of its geographic proximity to Leipzig. Henschke further advised Ulbricht that he confirmed Hager's communication regarding Fischer and that the Soviets had also "initiated a search" for Fischer but that the result of this search was "unknown." The only possible way to uncover the truth of what happened to Werner Fischer is to review classified WWII/Red Army documents that remain under seal in the Kremlin.
