ABSTRACT

The art of self-knowledge refers to a deliberate examination to discover one’s personal self and is essential for improving deductive clinical reasoning. It leads to our personal and professional development as health care professionals in providing effective care and in improving health outcomes for people we care for. This chapter outlines the significance of self-knowledge with regard to: self-knowing, knowing the environment, consciously observing, and deducing from and about the environment. By incorporating reflective exercises and case studies, this chapter connects the art of self-knowledge, reflective practice, and mindfulness. It describes how these skills are critical for developing an effective therapeutic relationship between health care professionals and persons within mental health settings.
