ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a definition of the main concepts used while dealing with water law, mainly for the benefit of non-lawyers interested in water law. Thus, it defines water law and its content. Since water resources management is a cross-cutting issue, it further illustrates the relationship between water law and other related legal disciplines, including civil law, agrarian law, mining law, environmental law, public health law and criminal law. Finally, it focuses on the sources of water law, i.e., on the origins of the legal rules governing the management of water resources. These are legislation, international and interstate agreements, the binding decisions of regional bodies, the binding declaration of international organizations, case law and scholarly opinion.
