ABSTRACT

Different people’s beliefs may include rules about what they ought to do, how they ought to interact with others, how society should be organised, how the world was created, what they as individuals are capable of. Many people see what they believe as the foundation of their being and the basis on which they interact with the world. Once a critical mass of people in the group surrounding us has a particular belief, it becomes almost part of the air we breathe, an unwritten rule about how to behave. Many people are hooked by thinking that their beliefs are immutable and their character is a given. When we take a position, we may be responding to a hook from someone else and we in turn may behave in a way that hooks others. Not only do people behave in a whole range of different ways, they also think differently, hold different values and have different preferences for communication.
