ABSTRACT

This chapter examines South Africa’s positions on civil and political rights at the UN Human Rights Council, specifically on human rights issues related to peaceful protest, freedom of expression, civil society space, human rights defenders, political participation, rule of law, and judicial integrity. The discussion will provide yet further evidence of South Africa’s anti-imperialist inclinations and that South Africa stands on the side of repressive governments rather than on that of people whose rights are threatened or violated.
