ABSTRACT

Genes are special blocks of code found in the chromosomes. Thus, the gene is seen in a new light. It is no longer simply a mysterious discrete unit of inheritance. Now we know more about what it is and how it functions. It is made of DNA material and it is an instruction code for building a polypeptide molecule from a string of amino acids. One or more polypeptides combines to make a protein. Sometimes we shorten this to saying that genes provide instructions for building proteins. In this chapter, we shall see how this process is carried out.
