ABSTRACT

It was postulated that certain of the Beveridge's 'giants' would need to be tackled jointly by statutory and voluntary organisations, and this chapter focuses on Squalor, Ignorance and Disease, with the latter of which was coupled the twin, Disablement. It explores how well equipped the voluntary organisations are to play their part in this battle, and whether strategy and tactics are well co-ordinated by them and their more powerful comrades-in-arms, the various authorities through which the state plays its part. A random sample of one in ten of the organisations was taken. The organisations in the sample vary in other ways. Several of the organisations have specific or near-specific religious origins, aims or regulations. The paid CEOs themselves were a varied group of people. Generally they gave the impression of real commitment to their cause, that their work meant more to them than a means of earning a living.
