ABSTRACT

This chapter presents examples of candid and compassionate conversations to restructure leadership learning. It also presents a study on inexperienced teachers hired by Dr. Collins, principal of Hillsborough West High School. Dr. Collins carved out time within the steering committee meetings and created a teacher leader professional learning communities to develop needed skills, focused on effective collaboration through teamwork. The steering committee meetings are 60 minutes long, agenda driven, and follow three distinct areas of focus: Review and Reflect, the Instructional Imperative, and Leadership Matters. The major shift that Dr. Collins needs to make is in his assumption that covering the material and having great discussions on the topic will somehow lead to growth for the teacher leaders. Leadership development must be intentional with clear outcomes and required actions for the participants.
