The benefits of training your replacement include having two people with the same agenda and skill set, which allows you to be absent without hurting the plant, and makes for a smooth transition if you retire or are moved to a different position.

The person you choose should be one of the top people in your organization. Their personality is key. They must be able to work with all levels of people in the organization, and they must be loyal to you. It really isn’t necessary that they understand all of the specifics of managing the plant, you will teach them, and you should plan on it taking at least 6 months. You should not start this training until you have reached the intended goals. Let your direct reports know that you will be selecting one of them for this training once the plant is operating to the specified goals.
