ABSTRACT
Chapter one is an introduction to the book. It addresses the complexity of analysing landscapes. It advocates analytical narratives as a way of raising landscape awareness. This requires an actualisation of a pastoral ideal by the analyst, a reflection on a present human condition. The analytical narrative follows a visual rationality in turning sight into insight. The purpose of any pastoral landscape analysis is to propose images of a humanity-nature unity which are relevant to contemporary society.
