ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates that the Lisbon Expo represents a shift in attitude towards the design of World’s Fairs urban plans. It analyses the afterlife of the Lisbon Expo plan in two ways: first, by placing the Lisbon urban model within the history of design of World Fairs; and second, by analysing the history of the reception of its urban plan and its legacies and lessons for planning and urban design. The chapter aims to highlight the key elements of the urban plan, an in-depth reading of its planning and design has been undertaken. In the Lisbon model during the development of the project it became clear that the success of the urban plan depended more on the effectiveness of the urban design to transform the Expo into a neighbourhood. The Expo ’98 success went beyond everyone’s expectations, even for its mentors and designers.
