ABSTRACT

This is Daniel and Caroline’s first appointment. When I go to the waiting room, my first impression is that the couple do not look as though they are together. They are sitting close, but look quite detached from each other. I only know that they are the couple booked in to see me since they are the only two people in the waiting room. I introduce myself, and shake hands with them both. Caroline says she is Caroline, and smiles anxiously, and Daniel looks me directly in the eye, in what seems to me more like a “summing up” than a “challenging” way. Daniel says, “Hi, I’m Dan,” and I query if he would like me to call him Dan or Daniel. He says, “Dan.” Caroline is casually dressed, and Daniel is dressed in a perfectly ironed white shirt and well-cut suit.
