ABSTRACT

The separating process based on centrifugal force can separate solids (or liquids) from liquid(s) very efficiently. This type of separation process has become an indispensable method used in biological engineering. Chapter 2 summarizes the centrifuge process, the basic principle of centrifugal sedimentation, centrifugal separation method, and common centrifuge rotors involved in bioprocess engineering. The chapter also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of centrifugal separation and the common centrifugal equipment used in the laboratory and industry. An important aim of this chapter is to look at the development prospect of centrifugal technology and to help readers understand the latest research trends of centrifugal separation technology in bioprocess engineering.
