ABSTRACT

On completion of the process to blend a specific lubricant formulation, the product needs to be tested to check that it is “on specification” (meets the required properties and performance) and has been blended correctly. This needs to happen before the product can be either packaged or shipped in bulk for delivery to customers.

A large number of tests can, and are, used to evaluate the properties and performance of a given lubricant. However, many of these tests are unsuitable for use in a lubricant blending plant. Evaluation of whether a blended lubricant is on specification or not must be done as quickly as possible, so that the product can be packaged and shipped to a customer to meet a delivery date.

Chapter 10 looks at many tests that are used to assess lubricant properties and performance, explains why most of them are not suitable for use in a blending plant and discusses those tests that are useful. It also provides guidance on specific tests that should be used for specific lubricant types.
