ABSTRACT

In order to manufacture lubricants that meet customers’ requirements, the raw materials need to be analysed to check that they have the required properties, as set out in the products’ specifications.

Many tests can be used to assess the properties and performance of base oils, additives and blended lubricants. Some are used in base oil refining and additive manufacturing processes. Others are used to research and develop new or improved lubricants. Some are used in blending plants, as part of product quality control and assurance.

Chapter 9 focuses on those tests that are useful in a blending plant to check the properties and quality of the base oils and additives to be used for blending.
