Apart from purely logical concepts discussed in the previous chapter, a considerable part, in this book, will be played by the concepts: ‘part of’, ‘precedence in time’, and other related ones. In order to clarify the necessity of introducing these concepts into the field of phonology (and to linguistics, in general) it will be useful to discuss the following simple example.
