ABSTRACT

In the preceding two chapters we have described the foundations of our axiomatic system in the frame of which the principles of theoretical phonology will be formulated. Of course, we shall be mainly concerned with analysing and precisely defining the term ‘phoneme’. Therefore, definitions will play the principal role in our further considerations. At the same time, of course, we shall formulate various theorems. These however will be from the intuitive point of view rather obvious. The main aim of our formulating these theorems will be to point out that various simple and ‘obvious’ properties of intuitive phonological concepts pertain (may be deduced from the axioms and definitions) also to their precisely defined counterparts. Our second aim is to state various simple relations holding between different concepts in order to facilitate a more profound understanding of our definitions.
