ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I will consider the relationship between two stances towards the self: unconditional self-acceptance (USA) from an REBT perspective and self-compassion (SC) from a compassion-focused perspective. I will argue that while it is best to develop USA before SC, these two concepts can be integrated both conceptually and practically. It is my basic thesis that the two concepts augment one another and that a therapeutic strategy based on the two together will be more productive than one based on each alone. As such, I will show the relevance of the REBT view of USA to modern views of SC. .
