ABSTRACT
The Belt and Road Initiative is perhaps the single most important catalyst for global change in the early 21st century. Massive investment in infrastructure across a range of countries may well transform the lives of billions of people. History can teach important lessons about the Silk Roads of the past, present, and future. The chapter discusses the opportunities that the Belt and Road Initiative presents, but also the challenges and problems that will impact the success of new Silk Roads.
