“Mystery of mysteries”

Darwin proclaimed the great significance of the question of the “origin of species” by declaring it to be the “mystery of mysteries”—a phrase borrowed from John Herschel. However, dealing with “origins” has questionable scientific legitimacy: it seems to be leading us away from scientific enquiry and into the sphere of religion.
