ABSTRACT

After reading Darwin’s Origin, many have looked for the ultimate meaning and the logical coherency of “Darwinism”: i.e., Darwin’s philosophical conclusions. Because its strength lies in its proposed unification of various fields of biology, Darwinism could never limit itself to being a local theory. Its scope must encompass the whole (living) world. But is it possible to extend the theory of the transmutation of species into a metaphysical system of atheism? Some think so, but for Darwin’s theist supporter Asa Gray, quite to the contrary, the Origin leads to the Creator.
