ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we again test the causal mechanisms of our two-step model based on a different case and on a different research design. We use data from the European Social Survey from 2002 to 2014 to analyze the EU attitudes of European Muslim citizens. Ninety percent of our sample is composed of Muslims with an immigration background. Adapting our theoretical framework to the fact that most European Muslims have a migration background, we argue that an immigrant bonus should result in higher levels of satisfaction with life, economy and politics which in turn makes European Muslims trust their domestic political actors. Consequently, we expect European Muslims to transfer these higher levels of domestic trust to their attitude toward the EU. Our results confirm our expectations, depicting European Muslims as the group with the highest level of trust in the European Union.
