ABSTRACT
This essay looks at Kandukuri Veeresalingam as a significant figure who led the ambivalent moment of transition in late-nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Andhra, when a growing interest in western forms of knowledge, particularly in rational humanism and scientific advancement, went hand in hand with a strong commitment to the cultural revival and recuperation of the ancient glory of Telugus. It highlights the literary work of Veeresalingam and demonstrates the importance of his translations in accelerating the transition of Telugu society to western modernity. It also demonstrates his method of translation wherein he endeavours to recontextualize the English original in a Telugu cultural milieu and ethos.
