ABSTRACT
This chapter maps the translation of novels from different contexts into Telugu from the nineteenth century. It examines how novels in Telugu were influenced by diverse ideological contexts and interests, both from Indian languages as well as from outside. It points out how not many women writers are translated even from the most translated literatures into Telugu. This essay observes that most translators in Telugu are established writers themselves and that their translations function as an extension of their writings and ideologies. Examples of select writers/translators and their work are used to elaborate these points.
