ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book gives students a strong understanding of the benefits of a community/university relationship in documenting local history through oral interviews with community members. It discusses the oral history projects that grow out of such relationships are complicated and come with inherent challenges. The relationship between the community and the university is multi-faceted and what works in one part of the university may not represent what is happening overall in the relationship. The oral interview process, even if within the context of a few years, creates a more tangible and collaborative space for the university and the community to engage with each other. This type of project can give students hands on experience in oral history techniques, experiential education in their courses, and a great connection to the community in which their institution is located.
