ABSTRACT

Since 1988, the year of radiocarbon dating, no more samples have been officially taken from the Shroud, except from those in 2002 that are in the exclusive custody of the archdiocese of Turin. However, several scholars took advantage of the samples taken in the past years, and they are doing it. This is the reason why it can be useful for the reader to know what these samples are on the basis of which the research is carried out, waiting for new samples to be given to the scientific community. More than focusing the attention on the path of the Sheet, the chapter focuses on the samples, sometimes considered as relics, insofar part of the Sheet that enveloped Christ’s body, sometimes as fragments of scientific relevance. As far as the Shroud is concerned, the first fragments that appeared over the course of history with relic purposes date back to 1700.
