ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author talks about one of the worst failures of his career, his failure with Samantha. She wanted psychotherapist's mind and thinking to be the same as hers. Whenever he suggested a point of view that differed from hers, she felt like that the psychotherapist was trying to take over her mind. When it became clear that the therapy with Samantha had ruptured beyond repair, the author continued to work with his consultant. The author's first psychoanalyst had been a soft-spoken and gentle man. Now he sought a therapist who was rougher and tougher in his demeanor. From Charles' perspective, the author's childhood took on a new shape. During this period of the work with Charles the author began to truly see and feel the psychological consequences of his father's withdrawal on his emotional development. There was very little psychological space for him to have a mind and goals of his own.
