ABSTRACT

There is a growing distance between the political left and the working class. This chapter first describes, and then explains, that increasing distance. Second, it identifies a myth that has prevented the political left from advancing beyond its present position. Third, it suggests that by adopting a radical new economic approach the left can move beyond its present pattern of failure and reconnect to the fragmented multi-ethnic working class. Towards the end of the paper, the authors offer a brief introduction to this new economic approach.
