ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the need for more theoretical and research attention on the role of time in leadership. It also addresses the timing and spacing of observations in longitudinal designs. The chapter elaborate on four specific areas within the broad leadership domain that have particular relevance for integrating and understanding the influence of time: leader behavior, leader emergence and follower perceptions, leader-follower relationships, and leader development. It highlights some troubling assumptions researchers make about the measurement and effects of leader behavior. Leader emergence is conceptualized as a socioperceptual process guided by followers' perceptions that are grounded in their respective implicit leadership theories. The chapter describes time and leader development has emphasized mainly concerns related to timescales and temporal design choices. Leadership researchers and especially those interested in leader development processes are urged to consider Intensive longitudinal data – based temporal designs.
