ABSTRACT

The Introduction familiarises the reader with the book’s topic, namely the legal rights and restrictions on creating and publishing still photographs in Ireland. It states, that for comparative purposes an analysis of the applicable law in the United Kingdom is also undertaken by the book’s author. Highlighted in the Introduction is the fact that the creation and publication of still photographs are two separate, but related activities. While the book discusses the law as applicable to professional still photographers and still photograph publishers, the Introduction notes that such law is equally applicable to amateur photographers and photograph publishers. The Introduction goes on to broadly scope the legal rights of still photographers and photograph publishers, the sources of such rights and the various types of legal restrictions and/or prohibitions which may be placed on such rights in order to protect the legal rights of third parties or as a consequence of either a range of legal duties of the state or ethical codes of behaviour. The Introduction outlines the aim of the book and the contents of the book’s chapters.
