ABSTRACT

Social media is an essential tool for young adolescents who use these platforms to fulfill several social goals (e.g., maintaining and expanding social circles). Moreover, social media use is not restricted to adolescents’ leisure time. The platforms are also increasingly involved in their educational development by providing opportunities for social support. Questions remain about the drawbacks of adolescents’ social media use. Some scholars are pointing to associations between social media use and lower school grades, and involvement in online risks, such as cyberbullying. Additional research can longitudinally examine the positive and negative aspects of youth’s social media usage.
