ABSTRACT

In July 1966, as part of Dr. H. W. Smith's drive to broaden the lab's relationship with the University of Toronto and to enhance its commitment to research and independence from the police. He persuaded the attorney general to approve an order in council changing the name of the lab from the Attorney General's Laboratory to the Centre of Forensic Sciences. Attendance at the Fifth International Meeting of the Forensic Sciences was more than 500 delegates from all over the world, and a constitution for International Association of Forensic Sciences was adopted. On his return to Toronto, Ward Smith advised the attorney general of what he had done and received assurance that the Ontario government would provide some support in the form of a luncheon for the delegates. He also received assurance from the Canadian Society of Forensic Science that they would act as co-sponsor.
