ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly summarizes recent US statistics related to the industries in which chemical and biomolecular engineers work, and how much they are paid (average or median annual salaries).

Chemical and biomolecular engineers work in a very diverse array of industrial sectors, including but not limited to:

many types of manufacturing

pharmaceuticals discovery and production

healthcare

engineering design and construction

pulp and paper production

petrochemicals production

food processing

specialty chemicals production

microelectronics

electronic and advanced materials

polymers production

business services

biotechnology

environmental, health, and safety (EHS) industries

law

law enforcement

public service

Of the 34,300 jobs classified as “chemical engineering” by the US government in the latest (2014) data (see Table 3.1), median annual pay for those with a chemical engineering degree was US$98,340 per year, or about US$47 per hour (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2017).
