ABSTRACT

The small step structure of the programme fits well into literacy hour planning as each day of the week covers a different activity for a small group of struggling readers. It is designed to support the needs of children requiring a 'daily dose' of basic literacy strategies. It can be adapted for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and has been used in primary schools from Year 2 to Year 6. Any text can be applied to the programme, fiction or non-fiction, reading scheme or 'story' book. Read the book to the children, then read the book with the children, using the Literacy Hour guided reading approach, encouraging pupils to read independently. The objectives will appear on a group or individual education plan (IEP) for each child; brief notes at the end of the week's activities will enable the teacher and support assistant to monitor progress towards reaching these IEP targets.
