ABSTRACT

Hollywood narratives have created a system of knowledge that reinforces White patriarchal hegemony, while oppressing minorities in an effort to maintain White supremacy. Women and minorities have fought for positive and accurate representation in Hollywood since its inception, but the lack of diversity both behind and in front of the camera has hindered the ability to change the stereotypical narratives ascribed to individuals in those demographics. Although Black Love is revered on social media as goals people aspire to attain, ironically, that same admiration and positive reflection is rarely seen in Hollywood. The ideal of the Black woman who can endure hurt and trauma without being impacted is unrealistic and perhaps one of the most prevalent characteristics associated with Black women on screen. In reality, Black women choose to support Black men at all costs, whether granting sexual favors, ignoring Black male abuse or caring for their children.
