ABSTRACT
One senses that in the space, personal matters can be shared, explored, and potentially resolved. Extending the idea, one might also consider the space as an emerging metaphor regarding the intertwining of Eastern and Western musical forms. Combining gestures derived from both Eastern and Western musical practice, the song accesses a remarkable amount of latent energy within the two styles, which finds its release through the musical form. Thus, George Harrison’s explorations of Eastern music and culture were, once again, an essential part of the process. During the filming of the scene, Harrison took the opportunity to play the sitar, an instrument he would later use to complete one of the most memorable tracks from Rubber Soul. During the recording of the complex vocal harmonies, the nuances of the group dynamic, particularly between Harrison and Lennon, were on full display.
