ABSTRACT

The community, specifically family, plays a pertinent role in establishing co-operation between the detainees and the rehabilitation programmes. This chapter expounds on the implementation of a programme focused on family involvement that forms the social rehabilitation structure in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Sri Lanka and Singapore (in the case of Singapore, this chapter focuses on the family of Singaporean members of Jemaah Islamiyah only) in their rehabilitation approach. The family is key to building mutual trust and respect and has the potential to act as a catalyst and agent of change, key to countering violent extremism. The initiatives outline the design and multi-faceted challenges that countries have experienced when implementing social rehabilitation. This chapter recommends probable measures to overcome the difficulties. Examining the existing literature in terrorist rehabilitation and interviews with experts and practitioners in this field form the basis of the methods used in this chapter.
