ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the differing approaches to ‘emotional intelligence’ (EQ). It looks at the ‘ability model’ and ‘mixed model’ used to measure human emotional intelligence. It goes on to consider whether a similar approach might be used to assess a building’s emotional intelligence, or even the emotional intelligence of a workspace. It highlights the sensemaking ability of workplaces, enabling people to create coherent narratives about themselves and co-workers. Finally, the chapter introduces the three dimensions of any artefact – instrumental, aesthetic and symbolic. When thinking of the workspace as a spatial artefact, we can start to explain the differing types of emotion encountered in the work environment.
