ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the new typologies of workspaces. Enabled by wireless communication, they represent a shift towards urban and collaborative workspaces. In this complex arena, the office becomes more impermanent and less defined by bricks and mortar. Against this backdrop, the conclusion examines how positive emotions can be triggered using instrumental, aesthetic and symbolic dimensions. Seen in this way, the workplace is not simply future oriented (towards output). Instead, the aesthetic dimension allows creativity and the symbolic dimension nurtures a sense of belonging and identity.
