ABSTRACT

Human sex trafficking, modern-day slavery, occurs when anyone—females, males, or gender-variant individuals of any age—is deceived into sexual exploitation for individual or commercial profit. Global relevant statistics of human trafficking demonstrate its alarming escalation. A complete definition and the implications of sex trafficking are provided. The opening chapter establishes the book’s focus on these three foremost areas for sex trafficking: the United States, India, and Nepal. An introduction to sex trafficking survivors is provided through typical examples from international areas and explanations of how relevant cultural factors influence and enable a culture that supports the tyranny of trafficking. This diverse trio of trafficking regions establishes the varied aspects of sexual exploitation and how cultural and societal beliefs regarding the devalued status of women and international disorders such as poverty, political instability, natural disasters, and corruption contribute to a country’s social ills and enslavement. Lastly, an overview of the book is provided in this chapter.
