ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how Resilient health care (RHC) principles have been incorporated into a general intensive care unit and the effects this new approach has on the delivery of patient care. Resilient health care RHC represents the application of resilience engineering principles to the health care system. The Team Resilience Framework was designed to be scalable across all aspects of team function in the critical care complex from meetings, to crises, to the ward round and even for patient-centred care. The most significant progress occurred when the Team Resilience members applied the Framework to how they organised the simulation days. The first scenario on a simulation day is designed to demonstrate how to create functional teams while the second scenario shows how an effective team can adapt to meet unanticipated problems using resilience. While the simulations were useful to show how the change in behaviours affected team function, staff needed to have the opportunity to practise and integrate the principles.
