ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that when Muslim women interpret domestic violence as a spiritual diseases the Sufi tradition can be incorporated in Islamic psychotherapy to deal with spiritual violence. For example, if the Muslim psychotherapist uses cognitive behaviour therapy, the Sufi themes of patience, trust in God, contentment, and God as the ever-forgiver can change the negative cognitive schemas through the application of the Sufi practices of remembrance of God and thankfulness. However, further study is required to find out the benefits, risks, and psychotherapy guidelines for Muslim psychotherapists and their clients and how this model might help in Islamic psychotherapy.
