ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book traces the origins and evolution of physical development as a term in early childhood. It explores key concepts such as physical literacy, fundamental movement skills and physical activity, and outlines differences in provision in Finland. The book highlights the physical development needs of and ways in which these can be provided for babies, toddlers, children in the early years foundation stage, children in key stage 1 and children experiencing physical or learning difficulties once they start school. It looks at the ways in which sports, the physical environment and play might be adapted or structured to provide appropriate physical development opportunities, and four different approaches/interventions are then presented alongside data to support their effectiveness.
