ABSTRACT

While there are numerous examples of successful integration of firms and countries in GVCs, there are fewer studies on the difficulties confronted. This book provides examples of why India has failed to integrate in GVCs. Through an examination of the case studies in the manufacturing sector, it offers an explanation. The case studies provide the reader with a wide variety of experiences, throwing light on the process of knowledge dissemination and manufacturing practices in various sectors.

India presents a unique example of manufacturing capability in most sectors, but low integration in GVCs. The book brings together case studies spanning the entire manufacturing sector, from labour-intensive (such as garment, paper, and diamond) to capital-intensive (e.g. automobile and petrochemical) to knowledge-intensive (e.g. semiconductor microchip, chemical and pharmaceutical) sectors. The book presents stories of successful integration of firms in GVCs, as well as the difficulties faced by them in the process.
