ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the trend of mixing analog with digital media technologies. It discusses the popularity of “older” technologies like record albums, commonly known as vinyl, paper books, magazines and newspapers as well as the use of typewriters and film-based cameras and considers how people integrate these analog technologies with digital technologies and tools. People’s reasons for opting in and opting out of digital media were complex and multidimensional, but most interviewees said they were comfortable mixing new technologies with older ones. Intelligence agents, politicians, writers and movie stars have embraced yet another analog technology — the manual typewriter. Some devotees suggested that vinyl was a more authentic technology that showcased the human touch in its recordings, while others maintained that vinyl record albums produced a deeper bass and a more expansive frequency range that was closer to the original harmonic structure of the music.
